When I send clients a mix for final approval, I goose it up with a chain most would consider a mastering chain, for I do not know what they have been listening to before, and it needs to be of a typical commercial volume these days, for we are hardwired that louder is better. I further contend that you can make a fine mix, and use any tools which you may be associating with mixing or mastering and, all it is, is mixing. I invite you to read the article in the mixingmastering sub, titled, “mastering is all about a 2nd set of ears”, at least for starters, and start expanding your world - a great deal I do take the stance that self mastering is a fools errand. I assure you that none of my mixes are sent to Amateur mastering engineers, for I send it directly to the mastering engineer myself on most occasions. I mix for A studios and independent Music Producers,in the classic sense, not self recording musicians, in North America and Europe.
